What is HDMI?

HDMI or High Definition Multimedia Interface is a compact connector that combines video and audio into a single digital interface. HDMI connects digital audio and video sources such as DVD players, PC-s, Blu-ray Disc players, video game consoles with audio and video receivers such as various digital audio devices, digital televisions, computer monitors etc...
HDMI supports any TV or PC video format including standard and high-definition video along with up to 8 channels of digital audio.

The HDMI is based on two tehnologies, DVI and HDCP. Development of HDMI is overseen by the HDMI Working Group that includes Hitachi, Silicon Image, Matsushita Electric Industrial, Philips, Toshiba and Thomson (RCA) as members.

Latest standard is HDMI 1.3c that enables pixel clock rate 340MHz which allows for higher resolution, such as 2560x1600, across a single digital link, 8 channel uncompressed digital audio at 192kHz sample rate with 24 bits/sample as well as compressed audio streams and bandwidth of up to 5 gigabytes per second.
