What is SVGA?

SVGA or Super Video Graphics Array is a term for computer display standard. It is also known as UVGA or Ultra Video Graphics Array and it is consider to be a direct successor of VGA standard. Main difference is that SVGA was defined by VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) in 1989.

SVGA standard resolution is 800x600 and uses a VGA connector, the same DE-15 (a.k.a. HD-15) as the original standard. Number of colours was defined in original specification, but soon became irrelevant. Theoreticaly there is no limit to the number of different colours, since VGA or Super VGA monitor uses simple analog voltages to indicate the desired colour depth. Officially Super VGA was to be succeeded by Super XGA, since computer industry classified all display systems developed between 1990s and 2000s as Super VGA.
