What is VGA?

VGA or Video Graphics Array is a term for analog computer display standard integrated into computer graphic cards that provides digital-to-analog conversion of data sent computer's display. VGA also relates to the 640×480 resolution or 15-pin D-subminiature VGA connector. The standard was introduced by IBM in 1987 and it was accepted by all manufacturers.

The VGA resolution of 640x480 is consider to be obsolete for computer but it is very popular for mobile devices. VGA is also determined by refresh rates in hertz and resolution. Here are some specification of VGA standard:

  • resolution 640x480,
  • refresh rates up to 70 Hz,
  • 16-color and 256-color modes,
  • 256 KB Video RAM.

VGA standard was superseded by Super VGA or SVGA standard.
